Today a one-minute snippet of Maroon 5’s rumored new single “Payphone” was leaked to a soundcloud account. You can listen here while it’s still up:
It’s a solid pop tune and thematically the song will play well after Adam Levine’s recent public break-up. But lyrically the song disappoints:
You called it love, but even the sun sets in paradise
I’m at a payphone, trying to call home
all of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it’s all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?
If happy ever afters did exist
I would still be holding you like this
All these fairytales are full of shit
Want my fucking love song, I’ll be sick
Oh, you turned your back on tomorrow
’cause you forgot yesterday
I gave you my love to borrrow
but you just gave it away
Is it a little too much to expect 33 year old Adam Levine to dig a little deeper? I’ve been excited for the new album, especially after hearing the band decided to fully embrace a pop sound. I’ll wait for the full track before I issue a final judgment, but so far I’m a little underwhelmed by Overexposed.
